<br /> György Martin (1932–1983) was considered by his Hungarian and foreign contemporaries to be one of the most important folk dance researchers both in Hungary and internationally. György Martin’s significant and extensive work, though brief, set an example for posterity: successive generations have been striving to live up to his legacy ever since. His monograph on Hungarian circle dances, published in Hungary in 1979, was a model for the presentation of Hungarian folk dances in a type-oriented monograph and at the same time defined the place and position of Hungarian folk dance culture in European dance folklore. Shortly after the publication of Martin’s monograph, the ethnographer Bertalan Andrásfalvy, Martin’s former research colleague, wrote: “György Martin's book is not only the greatest work of Hungarian dance research to date, but is also an exemplary work of comparative historical folkloristics.” The present volume by Martin is a groundbreaking, internationally relevant work that provides useful and important insights for dance folklorists, dance anthropologists, and dance professionals in general, as well as for the interested public.
Martin Györgyöt (1932–1983) hazai és külföldi kortársai az egyik legjelentősebb néptánckutatónak tartották itthon és külföldön egyaránt. Széleskörű tájékozottságról tanúskodó munkássága példaértékű az utókor számára. A néptánckutatók ma is követendő modellként tekintenek életművére. Az 1979-ben Magyarországon megjelent, a magyar körtáncokat európai kontextusba helyező munkája mintaként szolgál a magyar néptáncok típusorientált monográfiákban történő bemutatásához. Nem sokkal Martin monográfiájának megjelenése után Andrásfalvy Bertalan etnográfus, Martin egykori kutatótársa ezt írta: „Martin György könyve nemcsak a magyar tánckutatás máig legnagyobb alkotása, hanem az összehasonlító történeti folklorisztika példaértékű alkotása is.” Ennek most közreadott angol nyelvű változata nemzetközi vonatkozásban is úttörő munka, amelyet egyaránt haszonnal forgathatnak táncfolkloristák, táncantropológusok, koreográfusok és a néptánc iránt érdeklődők szélesebb köre.
